How to build a dog house yourself, without spending too much time and money on it? Read on.
Hello!
This seems like a daunting task, but today we will show you how to build a dog house without too much effort. It will be simple dog house design that anyone can master, and gladly, we don’t need anything sophisticated anyways – dogs can’t appreciate architecture.
For this task you will need correct materials and some patience. The most important rule will be – “Measure Twice, Cut Once”.
You will need some untreated boards, pressure treated boards, boxes of galvanized screws and nails. Also some paint/stain (exterior), composite materials for roof and finally, and a tube of cement for roof.
(full list of materials with quantity numbers available below)
There are some tools you will need too. We included all those in the list with materials.

If you don’t know how to build a dog house, here are few important things to have in mind:
• You shouldn’t use pressure treated boards on parts that your dog can chew. They contain toxic chemicals and are quite dangerous for your pet.
• Also you should remember that dog house should be lifted from the ground, to isolate cold and moisture.
• Your dog house should be of the right size. If your dog is able to turn around comfortably – it’s perfect. You don’t need to build bigger house – it will not be able to keep the heat, plus dogs don’t like big dwellings.
The foundation of the dog house will be built from 2″x4″ pressure treated board. Just cut it in 4 pieces – 2 24″ and 2 21″. The longer ones will be used for walls, while remaining 2 for entrance and back.
All boards will be nailed together with galvanized nails. And make sure you make holes (3/4″ to 1″) in the side of the boards. It will help with moisture evaporation. You may want to cover them with cloth or install small vents (you can find these in any hardware store) to prevent rodents/birds/bugs from sneaking in.
Here is a diagram of how to build a dog house.
If you plan to do any changes in the size it all should be measured and sketched before you will do the actual sawing/drilling. Roof parts should be cut like that: 21-1/2″x32″ and 21″x32″. This is needed for easier attaching. Front and back walls are need to be cut 21″ wide and 27″ high (scaling in the image is a bit off, yes), tapering down to 16″. The walls should be 16″x25-3/4″.
Finally, when all the measurements are made and all is correct you can cut the template. Don’t forget to check everything. Then carefully attach everything with screws (see the image). It should like something like that, when assembled correctly.
Don’t forget to cut the entrance for your dog before assembling all pieces together. It depends on your dog size, of course. He should have no trouble entering in.
Last part is installing the roof. It designed to be detachable, as this will make cleaning much easier. You can seal the whole thing, but we really recommend to leave the roof detachable. And it will be quite easy after all, since side A of the roof (the longer one) will sit on side B and they will be screwed together. The cement (which is optional) should be used in all the holes that can let water through. And don’t forget to bend nails inside, so your dog cannot get hurt.
Finally, apply the paint and let it dry. When the paint will be
completely dry, your dog will be able to use it. It should look like that (see the picture).
